A long tradition of hospitality

The history of Hotel Barchetta Excelsior began in the early 19th century, when it was established as a restaurant serving the best local cuisine before becoming a hostelry and, subsequently, a hotel. The business has always been associated with Como’s past, which continues to attract tourism year after year. Having observed changes down the years, the hotel has undergone renovations and improvements, making it a relaxing choice for short and long stays on Lake Como.

From restaurant to hostelry
Opened as a restaurant in the early 19th century, it became a hostelry called Trattoria con Alloggio della Barchetta. Managed by Pasquale Zaffaroni, the restaurant quickly became known for its excellent cuisine and "trota alla barchetta", a renowned freshwater fish recipe.
1956
Hotel Barchetta Excelsior opens
A veranda overlooking the piazza and lake was added by architect Giampaolo Allevi (1926-2010) in plans to expand and renovate the restaurant. The property changed its name to Hotel Barchetta Excelsior, setting a new standard of service and hospitality.
1995
Entering the Villa d’Este group
The hotel is acquired by the Villa d'Este Group and further renovated. The historic building was connected to the adjacent edifice, increasing the capacity to 84 rooms, as Como was becoming a tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.
